GST Alert: Could Your Business Owe GST Even If You Never Registered?

Last Modified : September 18, 2026

Your Singapore business may already be approaching the GST registration threshold without you realising it. Check your GST risk before IRAS does.

Could Your Business Owe GST Even If You Never Registered?

Your business may be making healthy sales—but are you sure you are not already required to register for GST?

Many business owners only check GST when a client asks for a GST invoice. By then, their business may already be close to, or above, the S$1 million taxable-turnover threshold.

If compulsory GST registration applies and action is delayed, the business may have to account for GST from an earlier date, even if GST was never collected from customers.

Do You Know These Numbers?

  • Your total sales for the past 12 months
  • Revenue received via bank transfer, PayNow, Stripe, Shopee, Lazada or other platforms
  • Invoices raised but not yet paid
  • Deposits and advance payments received from customers
  • Sales made under related companies or different business names
  • Whether your taxable turnover may exceed S$1 million in the next 12 months

GST registration is based on taxable turnover—not simply what is sitting in your bank account.

“I Did Not Collect GST” Does Not Always Mean “I Do Not Owe GST”

This is one of the most costly misunderstandings for growing businesses.

If GST registration should have been made earlier, IRAS may require the business to account for GST on taxable sales from the effective registration date. The company may then need to fund the GST from its own margin if it cannot recover the amount from customers.

IRAS Is Moving Towards More Digital GST Reporting

GST-registered businesses are being progressively brought into the GST InvoiceNow requirement, where invoice data is submitted through the InvoiceNow network. This makes clean invoicing, accurate GST coding and proper accounting records increasingly important.

Check the official IRAS GST InvoiceNow implementation timeline.

Do Not Wait for an IRAS Letter

If your business is growing, sells through multiple channels, receives deposits, or has incomplete accounting records, it is worth reviewing your GST position now.
